Embedded Earrings
Embedded Earrings
On rare occasions, your earrings can get embedded into the earlobe due to a variety of reasons such as:
- Trauma
- Ongoing inflammation of skin around the ear ring
- Inadequate earlobule hygiene resulting in irritation of ear lobule skin.
When this occurs, the embedded earrings can cause pain, swelling, redness and ear discharge. It left untreated, it could lead to pus/ abscess formation and ascending infection towards the face.
Treatment of embedded earrings requires immediate surgical removal, drainage of any pus and treatment of concurrent infections. Occasionally the patient needs to be admitted for intravenous antibiotics.
