Sebaceous Cysts

Sebaceous cysts are white or yellow-coloured swellings which arise from the sebaceous glands. They occur when the sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands is unable to escape through its designated ducts due to blockage or damage.
Sebaceous cysts range from small to large ones which can become infected causing abscess. Where possible, excise the sebaceous cyst when it is small to prevent complications. If left untreated, sebaceous cysts can enlarge, become infected and cause pain or have complications like abscess formation. Sebaceous cysts rarely resolve by themselves without surgery.
